Peer Coaching Program

Cultivating A New Generation of Peer Leadership

A Peer Coach is a person who empowers an individual in their personal journey towards recovery offering hope; while providing advocacy, guidance, motivation and knowledge.

And a Peer Coach is so much more.

An effective peer coach is often a person who has experienced “symptoms” of a mental illness (depression, anxiety, panic attacks, bipolar disorder, OCD, substance abuse, co-occurring disorders, Schizophrenia and other mental health issues.) Followed at some point by a period of recovery in which they have learned coping skills in order to deal with and manage their lives.

Coaching is not rocket science-It’s more complicated. The brain is more complex than any computer. An RIA Peer Coach is someone who wants to expand their own life, grow and improve into a better coach. They need to be willing to sacrifice some personal short term pain and feel with the client. They need to know how to attune themselves to sensitive and hurting people and make that empathy visible. They are compassionate and honest.

Their primary objective is to help and serve others, always being trustworthy and reliable and show that they are well rounded in interests and knowledge so they can discourse on many topics in an easy going, calm, gentle, non-intrusive fashion. An RIA peer coach does not need to be right but needs to be determined to find the best possible solution when faced with the challenges of each individual they are helping.

A peer coach needs to be able to use their recovery experiences without shame and be willing and able to articulate what they have learned. They need to put into action the insights often learned from all the resources and people who helped them to get better. Coaches need to set appropriate limits and boundaries.

At Recovery In Action International, our Peer Coaching program is set to begin in early 2011. We welcome any inquires about the program and the value of Peer Coaching as a major factor to help and support your family member, friend, associate or yourself. Find out more about how RIA is offering hope and recovery success stories of successful peer coaches and how they have helped others achieve their best life.
