Why We Are Unique

At Recovery In Action International we are a group of individuals from all walks of life who share the common goal of eliminating stigma and ending discrimination against mental illness by bringing recovery to the community.

To achieve this goal Recovery In Action International is building a bridge of essential alliances with mental health agencies and client run groups, individuals and organizations from the general community. Our outcome is to unite all parties in order to eliminate any thought that mental illness is a life sentence.

Those we serve are ethnically and culturally diverse and provide the good news that people with mental illness can and do recover. Through both educational and peer services we find many who are delighted to share their remarkable stories that illustrate the life experiences of our population.

The approach we support towards recovery is holistic and includes mental, spiritual, physical and social avenues of healing. A key influence on the direction and principles of Recovery In Action International are inspired by those who have recovered and are recovering from mental illness and substance abuse problems and then emerge as a contributing member of the community. Our perspective is also influenced by the families, the professional participants, along with spiritual and community viewpoints.

Those with experience in the area of mental illness are a microcosm of the larger society and at Recovery In Action International our ideal is to be inclusive, together sharing many more perspectives. We welcome and network with people who have a mental illness, as well as the families, friends and loved ones of those facing this challenge.

Our stories illustrate that even those with serious problems can and have overcome their circumstances. Here we present many examples of those in recovery with productive lives including employment in high positions of authority and participation in service for the greater good of the community.

Anyone can be affected by mental illness. Whether mild or severe, short term or long lasting, everyone has been impacted by some form of emotional distress. Count your blessings if your distress has been of the milder, shorter lasting variety. Extend your compassion, hope and help to those who have been seriously impacted. For those of us who have had a more severe and or long lasting form of emotional distress (sometimes called mental illness) there is hope and clear evidence that recovery is possible and help is available.
