Steve
Coming from a family background where I saw mental illness destroy families and lives across generations, I grew up keenly aware of how these conditions curtail one’s belief in a meaningful future.
My own survival from a chaotic and violent childhood underlie a long interest in what motivates people to seek as well as achieve recovery, and a need to understand how mental health systems may best be an ally in this push for health.
As this search to overcome depression and trauma became personal, I left a career in journalism to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and joined the Department of Mental Health in 1999. I am now the Director of a large Family Mental Health Center in East Los Angeles.
